White Russian

An easy-drinking blend of vodka, coffee liqueur and cream, the White Russian was a favourite during the glory days of disco. Today it is a hipster staple once again.

The White Russian is a sweet cocktail that became especially popular after the film The Big Lebowski. I prefer using Kahlua or Tia Maria, but alternatives like Baileys can be used too. The White Russian is the signature drink of "the Dude", the protagonist of the cult classic The Big Lebowski. In the movie, the Dude refers to it as a "Caucasian."

  1. Pour in the Vodka, Coffee Liquor and the cream into a cocktail shaker and give a brief shake to thicken the cream and combine the spirits
  2. Add the ice to a short glass
  3. Pour the mixture over the ice
  4. Add the milk (optional) to taste.
  5. Sprinkle over the chocolate shavings (optional)
  6. Serve
The first mention of the word "White Russian" in the sense of a cocktail as appearing in California's Oakland Tribune on November 21, 1965
